Each year, during the month of March college basketball fans all across the country tune in to watch one of the most exciting and entertaining events of the year. This event is known as the NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament, or as we all refer to it as March Madness. The tournament began with Selection Sunday, which took place on March 15th this year and is when the teams finds out if they earned a spot in this competition or not. The tournament then runs from March 17th through April 6th. 3 weeks of intense games followed by either intense emotions or exciting emotions, and some unforgettable moments for certain teams and fans.
March Madness starts with the First Four games in Dayton, Ohio Dating on March 17-18th. Which is then followed by the First and Second Rounds where the teams are all competing to stay in the tournament. As the competition continues, those teams that remain standing will then advance to the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight which take place March 26-29. Only four out of the 68 total teams will make it to the Final Four which takes place at the Lucas Oil Stadium on April 4th in Indianapolis, Indiana. These four teams will be paired up and compete against each other to decide which two teams will make it to the national championship game taking place on April 6th. Interestingly, the tournament taking place this year marks the 87th edition of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament.
March Madness is ultimately known for the intense games that take place, the unpredictable outcomes of each game, and the excitement of seeing your team succeed and move onto the next round. UConn, Florida, Duke, Michigan, and Arizona are just some of the better known teams, which places them at a higher ranking than other teams. This doesn’t mean that the underdog teams won’t be able to come out and clutch up a win. The legacy of this tournament continues to grow as more young children become interested in the sport, or even just fall in love with a team or player. As someone who doesn’t really follow basketball, I enjoy watching some of the March Madness games with my grandfather since they are much more intense than regular season games.
