President’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated as our former President George Washington’s official birthday. This is considered a federal holiday, and it is celebrated on the third Monday of February every year. Originally, this holiday specifically honored George Washington, however, today we use it as a day to recognize other presidents who have shaped our nation’s history such as Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and many others. George Washington is remembered and recognized for his leadership during the American Revolution, along with setting important precedents while he was in office as president. Abraham Lincoln is  remembered for leading our country through the Civil War and working towards the end of slavery,  in order to better our country. Thomas Jefferson is remembered for doubling our nation’s size with the Louisiana Purchase and promoting our Democratic expansion. He is also  honored for being the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. 

     This holiday has become an important day where we look back and acknowledge the challenges, accomplishments and leaderships of our presidents and honor them for all their hard work and dedication to this country.  By gaining insight on our past presidents, we as a whole are able to come to a better understanding of how the United States has grown and changed over the course of time. President’s Day is a very important holiday that shouldn’t just be known as another day off of school and work, but should serve as a reminder of the values our nation was built upon; along with the hard work from these incredible historical figures.  With that being said,  we should spend our week off doing much more than just relaxing and for getting the reason why we have this break. This time can be taken to visit museums,  read about important historical events that helped to shape our country,  or even watch Informative documentaries.  It is important that you enjoy your break off,  but let’s not  forget the important duties these figures had,  and what they put themselves through to shape our world today.
