Best Picture: One Battle After Another

The motion picture directed by Paul Thomas Anderson took the stage and had won six awards out of their thirteen nominations. It was a top contender in the category, though people claim it is a bit surprising. The academy leaned over a more ambitious story rather than a classic blockbuster film.

Best Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

For One Battle After another, Anderson finally won Best director after fourteen previous nominations in differing categories. This award was a show of respect for his craft, and his previous years not having won. It is both recognition for his lifelong career and for this film.

Best Actor: Micheal B. Jordan

Winning for Sinners, Jordan was in a race between himself and the infamous Timothee Chalamet. There was high expectation that Chalamet would take the award, especially after having gotten this nomination multiple times in his short career. In the end, Micheal prevailed and ended up winning the award for his incredible acting as twins Smoke and Stack.

Best Actress: Jessie Buckley

Having won every major award show in the season, Jessie had her name written on the Oscar for her astounding performances in Hamnet. Her emotional performance captured the hearts of the audience, and in return the academy awarded her. 

Best Supporting Actor: Sean Penn

Despite not being there to accept the award, Sean Penn took the Oscar for Best supporting actor. Presenter Keiren Kulkin (Previous supporting actor winner) made a snide remark about him not showing up. Despite all the backlash, a lot of critics believe this win was fully deserved by his performance in One Battle After Another. He was also a previous Oscar winner, having won Best actor twice, and winning supporting this one time.

Best Supporting Actress: Amy Madigan

After years in the industry, Amy Madigan finally won her first Oscar for Weapons. Her first nomination had been in 1986, and decades later she had finally one. She was highly anticipated to have won this award through her successful award season. It was one of the more inspirational and confident speeches of the night.

Moments of the Night!

The Cast of Bridesmaids made an appearance all together on stage to present awards. Providing a short comedy sketch of them all reading letters to one another, they brought some lightheartedness to the Oscars.

Adrian Broady made a joke regarding his win last year, as his speech the year before was over six minutes. Making it the longest Oscar speech ever. 

Anne Hathaway made a nod to her new film “The Devil Wear’s Prada” by coming out to present the award for costumers with fashion Designer Ana Wintour. 

A more noted moment is when a bunch of speeches were cut short by the music while people were trying to speak.  A lot of people found it disrespectful to the winners, and that the award show should have fewer sketches so people wouldn’t have to rush through their speeches.
