Pinning and Winning
The Varsity wrestling team took on the 41st Garfield Holiday Tournament on 19 Dec. 2015. The tournament began with wrestlers from each weight class preparing for their first round. Although the boys had a slow start with multiple losses in the first round, others were able to step up for their team. Junior Captain, Chris Caban, was able to finish in first place for his weight class after winning three matches in a row, one of which by a tech-fall and another by a pin. Senior Captain, Steven Villa, didn’t fall short either; Villa also finished 3-0 for the day with two pins placing him in first for his weight class. Lastly, Senior Cainan Wallace finished in first for his weight class. After a bye for the first round, Wallace won two matches in a row for the first place title. The team itself finished fifth for the day. “Coming out with three champions is a very nice ending to a not-so-wonderful start of a day,” says Head Coach Maggio.” We need to work on first moves off the whistle; meaning, I would like them to not be so timid and hesitant.” When asked what is next for the Lodi wrestling team, Maggio responded with the Bergen County Coaches Association Tournament at Hackensack High School which will have every single team in the county present, including private schools. The team will be looking to start off stronger in their earlier matches and is aiming to finish strong with medals around their necks to show for it. Go support the Lodi wrestling team on Monday, Dec. 28, and Tuesday, Dec. 29 at Hackensack High School!
