Let me start off by saying I am incredibly lucky about the connections I have at this school. I was able to go on the field trip through being Mrs. Hansen’s TA (thank you Mrs. Hansen!) and this was one of the first field trips I was able to attend for the school year. Mrs. Halperin (the main organizer and one of our art teachers), Mrs. Hansen, as well Mr. Nicolosi (our other art teacher) were our chaperones. I was fortunate enough to have several of my friends with me during our visit and after waiting outside and inside for a total of 30 minutes, we were able to explore.
Stepping into the first exhibit, the only thing I could think of was “Wow.”
My friends and I went to several exhibits, such as Asian Art, Arms and Armor, European Sculptures, Greek and Roman Artifacts, Medieval Art, Oceanic Art, Musical Instruments, and many more.
Since we were only at the museum for two hours, you can imagine that we scrambled from place to place to see each exhibit we wanted. We were all well versed in different kinds of histories, so you can also imagine that we were itching to go to several different spots at the same time. You can also imagine that based on the exhibits I just listed, the Met is an insanely huge place.
And you’re right!
Our personal group was larger than five so it wasn’t difficult for several people to get lost. The worst part about being in a group is splitting up–and it was especially worse since the museum was supposed to be a more quiet place with no phone calls. The last fifteen minutes of our trip before we had to exit the building was actually all of the group trying to find each other.
We did, eventually!
All of this to say, I highly, highly recommend the Met. It’s a breathtaking experience if you want to reenact what you see in books and movies and just take what you’re seeing. Observe the paint strokes. Analyze the carved marble. Appreciate the work that was put in centuries before you even existed. It really makes you think about life.
It’s also cheap for students. The Met relies on a “Pay as you wish” system after 5pm, with NY, NJ, and CT state students needing to show ID to pay as little as a dollar for entry. Love the accessibility to the arts!
Please visit the Met! It is genuinely worth your time.
