Social Media plays a big role in every teenager’s life across America. Now that social media has evolved to become what it is today, some people may even say they couldn’t live without it. But knowing and understanding the effects of social media on your mental health is something that should be taken seriously. Social Media tends to increase the risk of anxiety and depression in young adults and teenagers. With this, it can only isolate your brain when it is being used as a way to retreat. The overuse of social media causes a fear of missing out and distraction where during the day the constant buzzing of your phone leaves you eager to open it right back up after shutting it off.
Temptations and regularly being on your phone oftentimes makes you feel that other people are living a life that’s better than yours or makes you feel as if you are missing out on something and need to keep checking in on updates. Always feeling the need to check in on what other people are doing could affect how you are living your own life or prevent you from creating real life connections which could be unhealthy. With most individuals failing to remember that not everything seen on social media is reality, they tend to tear down their own self esteem and forget that what they’re seeing is only what the creator wants them to see. Keeping in person interaction a priority can help maintain safe usage of social media in order to prevent problems that might lead to psychological issues in the long run. So while putting your phone down for some time might seem unreasonable to you, taking time off will ultimately be of use to your well being.
