Spring Equinox
Thursday, March 20, 2025 will be the reappearance of a spring equinox. This is the time of the year where you can go on walks, hikes, or simply sit and enjoy the beauty of the returning spring. The equinox marks the point where the day and night are equally long, making it a special time to witness these events, but what exactly is the Spring Equinox? Well it’s, the vernal equinox arrives on Thursday, marking the start of the spring season for the Northern Hemisphere and the fall in the Southern Hemisphere. On the equator, the sun will be directly overhead at noon. Equinoxes are the only time when both the north and south poles are lit by sunshine at the same time.
Throughout the year, people around the world are able to experience the beauty of the changing seasons. As the Earth orbits around the sun, it is rotating on its axis at a tilt of about 23.5 degrees. This 23.5 – degree tilt causes different parts of the planet to experience various amounts of sunlight throughout the year, creating the astronomical seasons. The Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, meaning more direct sunlight, warmer temperatures and longer days. The equinox usually occurs when the Earth’s Axis is completely perpendicular with the sun, bringing direct alignment with the equator.
- The Spring Equinox occurred at 5:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
- The word “Equinox” is derived from two latin words. Words Equi equal meaning, Nox meaning night.
- During march we gain around 70 minutes of daylight (an hour more)
