What is Veterans Day?
The First World War that was fought on November 11. 1918.
During the fight in the Western Front, many were lost and soon after people quickly went into a solemn state. To commemorate those who had lost their loves. During 1918 we had President Woodrow Wilson. Who had made sure that any soldier who had died during the “Great War” would be remembered forever.
Before it was called Veterans Day, it was called Armistice. It continued to be of importance for national identity and global memory. During 1939, another war was brewing. Other people have always picked up on the tradition like the British Commonwealth had picked up the habits of “Armistice day”, known as “Remembrance Sunday” , or “Remembrance Day.”
How did Armistice become what we know today as Veterans Day? There was a return of personnel, and so both soldiers from WWII and the Korean War had come back. President Dwight D . Eisenhower signed a bill, which would rename the “Armistice” to “Veterans Day.” He wanted all Americans to commit themselves to peace and to honor America’s Veterans for having the courage to give them the life they have today and the sacrifice they made.
Veterans Day was always important for Museums and Memorials. The original Memorial was dedicated on Armistice Day in 1926. President Calvin Coolidge had a dedicated speech to 150,000 people, which was the largest crowd a U.S president has had for a speech.
