History of Saint Patrick’s Day
As shocking as it may be, many people do not know the true meaning behind St. Patrick’s Day. This holiday is on March 17th every year and is a Irish holiday that is the death date of patron Saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. The true history behind Saint Patrick was that he was born in Roman Britain, not Ireland. He was kidnapped and brought to Ireland at 16 years old. He did end up escaping 200 miles from where he was held to the Irish Coast. He is known to be so important and celebrated because he did bring back Christianity to the people of Ireland. Not only is this holiday celebrated in Ireland, it is also celebrated in the United States, Caribbean Australia, Canada and many other countries.
On this day, almost every corner you turn, you are expected to see something green or see people wearing green.There is a list of ongoing celebrations that take place on March 17th. One of the most common traditions is eating corn beef and cabbage. A very fun and exciting tradition are the parades throughout city streets as people watch musicians and dancers. Irish dancing is traditional dance that originated in Ireland and the styles of this dance include step dancing, jig dance, Irish tap dancing. etc. A fun fact is if someone is not wearing green on the holiday, you are supposed to pinch them.
