Unorganized Cooking: Strawberry Shaved Ice

This didn’t come out as the evenly consistent balls I expected. This is shaved ice. At least it didn’t leave me bloated like the sugar mounds of corn syrup at Carvel. I should’ve ordered dairy that day. Even worse, I was sodden after that unexpected thunderstorm where I sought refuge at a deli until it passed. Oh yeah, and welcome back to Unorganized Cooking.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tub of strawberries
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Optional: Lemon

Cooking Time: 25min, if you exclude freezing it

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, set 1 cup of water to a boil.
  2. Insert 3tsp. sugar with the water.
  3. While we’re waiting for that to boil, blend the entire tub of strawberries.
  4. This is where I believe I’ve gone wrong. Half a lemon is optional, I don’t know why I even left it in the ingredients list.
  5. Let the syrup cool and pour it slowly into the puree. How much will vary on the consistency.
  6. Let cool in the freezer in a food grade durable container overnight.
  7. By the morning, it should be cold enough to serve. I know this might seem rushed and that’s because I waited too long to edit this article.

The consistency of this shaved ice starts off as the typical feeling you get with crushed ice, but due to the strawberries it melts into a smooth consistency. I also believe it could’ve used less mint.
