The winter sports season has come to an end, but before we jump into nice weather and flowers, let’s acknowledge all of the hard work of these athletes. The girls basketball made it clear that this season was a “rebuild” year prior to the start of the season; therefore, when facing tougher teams, the Lady Rams knew they would be gaining great experiences for the years to come. The girls finished the season 5-19, but sweeping rival Garfield made the season feel complete. Junior Olivia Russo said, “Even though we didn’t have the best season, we knew all of the losses we did take were just lessons that were learned for next year’s season.” With everyone returning except one, the girls’ team have high expectations for next year.

The wrestling team had a successful winter as they lived up to their high expectations. The squad went 14-6-1 as they beat teams that were favored against them week in and week out. Those big wins, ultimately, led to a state playoff run where the team won an electrifying home match. Besides team success, Deron Davis and Sean Tocci both came in second in the district and went on to wrestle in the region tournament. Head Coach, Dale Fava, said, “Yeah the season we had was great, but those big matches we did lose will definitely be won back in the room in the upcoming seasons.” The Rams will look to add on to the accomplishments they achieved this season with half the starting lineup returning next year.

With a rough start to the boys basketball season, the team was able to keep its composure and finish with a 8-15 record. The team was also able to post a big win against Manchester, who at the time had the best record in the league. Senior Anthony Zakrewski said, “One day it just clicked for us seniors at practice. We knew it was going to be our last season stepping the court, so we wanted to make it the best we could.” Next year’s team will be focused on sophomore Roland Leiva, who was a great role player being the sixth man this season. He is looking to increase his chances on recording 1,000 points. With the winter sport season finally ending, the baseball, softball, and track and field teams all look to have promising years while closing out the final chapter of sports the 2018-2019 school year.
