The 89th Academy Awards: An LHS Take

The 89th Academy Awards: An LHS Take

The 89th Annual Academy Awards is in the history books but not without controversy! Blunders such as Moana star Auli’i Cravalho being struck with a prop on stage or the in-memoriam segment featuring a living producer, didn’t stop this show from being entertaining and successful! Blusters aside, the awards were history-making for sure:

  • 9 films were up for Best Picture; 336 films were eligible for nomination. La La Land was announced as the winner, and Moonlight was later revealed as the real winner.

  • Every category featured a black actor.

  • La La Land tied Titanic’s record with 14 nominations, and took home 6 awards.

  • Jimmy Kimmel hosted for the very first time and kept a political tone the entire night.

  • Moonlight made history with its Best Picture win. It became the first LGBTQ film to win Best Picture and, Moonlight actor, Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win Best Actor.

  • This was the 16th Oscars held in the Los Angeles Dolby Theatre.

This year’s ceremony will be remembered for it’s Trump-like satire, Meryl Streep being totally overrated, and it’s super low ratings. Actually it was one of the most viewed Oscar’s ever. In fact, this awards season was one to remember.
